First, do you know where is the "versions" folder of your minecraft located at?
For example version 1.7.9: ~/.MineCraft\versions\1.7.9
Inside there will be a 1.7.9.jar file, open it with winzip or winrar, then go in assets>minecraft>textures.
Minecraft is using png and group to become their modeling. Not sure useful to you or not.
